How to Identify Trees By Flowers

The flowers of a tree can help tell you which kind of tree it is.

A tree’s flowers can be an important clue in identifying it. If a tree is flowering when you identify it, examine the flower carefully, noting its color and shape. Note how many petals the flower has and whether or not there are any sepals (green structures at the base of a petal).

For trees that have flowers that grow alone, look for leaves on the stem of the flower. These leaves will be from a different plant than what was producing the flower, but can help you determine where to find more of the same kind of plant.

Here are some trees with flowers you should recognize.

Here are some of the most common trees in North America, identifiable by their flowers:

  • Magnolia, Dogwood, Redbud
  • Cherry, Plum, Peach
  • Apple, Crabapple
  • Pawpaw
  • Pear, Quince, Serviceberry
  • Birch, Hornbeam, Hophornbeam
  • Beech, Oak, Chestnut

There’s cool stuff to learn about trees out there.

Head out for a stroll in your neighborhood, or take a hike at your local park. Check out the trees to see what you can find! Can you identify any of the trees from this article? If not, maybe you’ll discover some new species that haven’t been mentioned here.

While you’re outside, notice whether the flowers are sprouting on male or female trees. If you know how to tell these apart, it can help you narrow down which variety of tree it is. Also try to note if there are any small fruits growing on the tree after flowering season ends. Take note of what color they are and if they seem edible or poisonous.
